A Homecoming Homage

Solo exhibition by Jacqui Stockdale, The Outlaws’ Inn - 28 October 2022 to 29 January 2023

Contemporary Benalla remains coloured by Ned Kelly history and mythology in equal parts. Jacqui Stockdale’s recent work has been “propelled by a question I asked myself as a young girl riding through the hills of ‘Kelly country’... what really happened here?” The Outlaws’ Inn invites viewers to “feel privy to a siege, a wake, or a bushranger’s family reunion.”

Join artists Jacqui Stockdale (visual artist), Yumi Umiumare (choreographer), Emma Bathgate (vocalist and Chelle Destefano (Deaf performer and artist) for an Auslan interpreted creative expression workshop which playfully interprets the Ned Kelly gang.

Explore mask and costume making, movement and voice, and expressions of identity through gesture and cross-dressing. The workshop incorporates Japanese Butoh and Auslan sign language.

This inclusive workshop will culminate in a public performance, The Last Hoorah.

Performance: The Last Hoorah with Embedded poetic Auslan 6.30PM Saturday 5 November

The Last Hoorah is a satirical take on the Kelly Gang. The
work combines traditional street theatre, Japanese Butoh, costuming, movement, and a live ensemble of young voices.

A lively bunch of cross-dressing teenage larrikins dance until they drop, akin to a game of Musical Chairs, where competition creates mayhem and excitement and the winner takes all. The performance will feature Jacqui Stockdale, Emma Bathgate, Yumi Umiumare, Chelle Destefano, and members of the Benalla community. The performance will be Auslan interpreted and includes Chelle Destefano’s Embedded poetic Auslan.

A short film about a macabre party of in-laws and outlaws who use the ‘Bush Telegraph’ to share secret knowledge. Combining Stockdale’s collage, painting, photography and animation as well as original footage from the world’s first feature film, The Story of the Kelly Gang. This is Stockdale’s first film and is made in collaboration with Iranian-Australian animator and illustrator, Shirin Shakhesi.
